And One of the Most Rewarding

The Northern Circuit is different from Machame, Lemosho and Rongai because it spends several days travelling around Kilimanjaro's quieter northern slopes. Rather than rushing toward the summit, the route gives you more time to gradually adapt to altitude while experiencing a remarkable variety of landscapes. The route begins on the western side, crosses the Shira Plateau, turns north, and eventually circles toward the eastern side before the summit attempt.

01

More Time to Acclimatize

The nine-day itinerary gives your body more time to adjust gradually before summit night.

02

Remote Northern Wilderness

Experience a quieter side of Kilimanjaro with fewer trekkers than the busier southern routes.

03

Almost 360° of Kilimanjaro

Instead of seeing the mountain primarily from one side, the route takes you around its northern flank.

04

A More Unhurried Expedition

The additional days allow the journey itself to become part of the experience rather than simply a race toward the summit.

More Than a Climb. A Private Mountain Experience.

Don't think of this as a tour. Think of it as your own private expedition, designed around comfort, service and safety.

DAY 0

+

  • Airport pickup
  • Hotel check-in
  • Welcome from KiliSummit Expedition
  • Mountain briefing
  • Equipment inspection & gear fitting
  • Final health and preparation discussion
  • Opportunity to meet your guide
Evening: Enjoy dinner and rest before beginning your mountain expedition.
DAY 1

Moshi → Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa

Into the Rainforest

+
Start~2,100 m
Sleep~2,800 m
Distance~6–7 km
Hiking3–5 hours

After breakfast, your private vehicle takes you toward the western entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park. At the gate, registration and park formalities are completed while your mountain crew prepares the equipment. Then the expedition begins. You enter the dense rainforest where enormous trees, moss, ferns and birdlife create an atmosphere completely different from the lower slopes.

What you experience: Ancient rainforest · Giant trees · Mountain birdlife · Moss-covered vegetation · Cool, humid forest · First views into the Kilimanjaro wilderness. Your first day is intentionally moderate.

Premium experience: After arriving at camp: Welcome tea → wash/rest → health check → camp briefing → dinner. Your premium camp is already prepared when you arrive.

Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp

DAY 2

Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1

From Rainforest to the High Moorland

+
Start~2,800 m
Sleep~3,600 m
Distance~7–8 km
Hiking5–7 hours

The vegetation gradually changes as you leave the forest. The dense canopy gives way to giant heathers, open moorland and alpine vegetation. The landscape begins to feel enormous. Eventually, the trail reaches the Shira Plateau. And then you get your first dramatic views toward Kibo, the summit cone of Kilimanjaro.

Today's experience: Changing ecological zones · Giant heather · Giant senecio · Open mountain landscapes · First major Kibo views · Sunset across the Shira Plateau.

Evening: A hot wash arrangement where available, followed by tea and dinner.

Overnight: Shira 1 Camp

DAY 3

Shira 1 → Shira 2

Exploring the Shira Plateau

+
Start~3,600 m
Sleep~3,900 m
Distance~6–7 km
Hiking3–5 hours

Today is intentionally shorter. The purpose is not simply to cover distance. It is to allow you to spend more time at altitude while avoiding an unnecessarily aggressive ascent. You cross the dramatic Shira Plateau, one of the most spectacular sections of western Kilimanjaro.

The premium approach: Instead of rushing into camp, your guide can incorporate a controlled acclimatization walk depending on weather, fitness and the group's condition. Wide-open Shira landscapes · Kibo views · Giant volcanic terrain · High-altitude vegetation · Sunset over the plateau.

Overnight: Shira 2 Camp

DAY 4

Shira 2 → Lava Tower → Moir Hut

High for the Day. Lower for the Night.

+
Shira 2~3,900 m
Lava Tower~4,600 m
Moir Hut~4,200 m
Hiking6–8 hours

This is one of the most important acclimatization days of the expedition. The trail climbs toward the high-altitude Lava Tower area before descending toward Moir Hut. This follows the principle: Climb High. Sleep Lower. You temporarily gain substantial elevation and then sleep lower than the day's highest point. The scenery becomes increasingly volcanic and dramatic.

Experience: Lava Tower region · High alpine desert · Volcanic formations · Lent Hills · Remote Moir landscape · Extraordinary sunset opportunities. Moir Hut is one of the quieter areas on Kilimanjaro and is one of the defining experiences of the Northern Circuit.

Overnight: Moir Hut

DAY 5

Moir Hut → Buffalo Camp

Into Kilimanjaro's Remote Northern Wilderness

+
Start~4,200 m
Sleep~4,000 m
Distance~12 km
Hiking5–7 hours

Today the route turns decisively toward Kilimanjaro's northern side. This is where the Northern Circuit begins to feel genuinely different from many other routes. The trail crosses remote terrain with enormous views toward northern Tanzania and Kenya.

What you experience: Remote northern slopes · Vast volcanic landscape · Views toward Kenya · Kibo's northern face · Dramatic ridges and valleys · Fewer trekkers.

Premium evening: Arrive at your private premium camp and enjoy hot refreshments → recovery time → health assessment → dinner → briefing.

Overnight: Buffalo Camp

DAY 6

Buffalo Camp → Third Cave

The Quiet Side of Kilimanjaro

+
Start~4,000 m
Sleep~3,870 m
Distance~7–8 km
Hiking5–7 hours

This is another relatively gradual day. The route continues around the northern slopes toward Third Cave. The mountain's character continues to change. Instead of the busy feeling associated with some southern sections, you experience a much more isolated side of Kilimanjaro.

Today's focus: Acclimatization + scenery + recovery. You are now significantly closer to summit day. Your guides carefully monitor energy levels, hydration, sleep quality, appetite, altitude symptoms and walking pace.

Overnight: Third Cave Camp

DAY 7

Third Cave → School Hut

The Final Camp Before Uhuru Peak

+
Start~3,870 m
Sleep~4,700 m
Distance~5–6 km
Hiking4–5 hours

Today is short in distance but important psychologically. You approach the high saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi. The summit cone is now close.

Afternoon: After arriving at School Hut, the priority is recovery. Hot refreshments · Early meal · Summit briefing · Equipment preparation · Health assessment · Final clothing check · Headlamp check · Water preparation · Early rest.

Tonight: There is no normal "camp evening." You are preparing for the most demanding section of the expedition.

Overnight: School Hut

DAY 8

School Hut → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

SUMMIT DAY

+
Start~4,700 m
Summit5,895 m
DescentMweka Camp
Duration12–16+ hrs

This is the defining day. You wake around midnight or according to the guide team's planned summit schedule. After a light hot drink and snack, you begin walking into the darkness. Headlamps illuminate the trail. The pace is deliberately slow.

First objective: Gilman's Point — approximately 5,681 m. From here, climbers continue along the crater rim. Then: Stella Point — approximately 5,739 m. And finally: UHURU PEAK — 5,895 m. The Roof of Africa.

At the summit: Celebrate · Take photographs · Enjoy the views when weather permits · Receive summit recognition · Contact family where communication is available. Then the descent begins. You return toward the lower camp on the southern side of the mountain.

Premium summit support: You are never simply "sent up the mountain." The guide team monitors your condition throughout the summit attempt and makes decisions based on safety, weather and your physical condition.

Overnight: Mweka Camp

DAY 9

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi

The Journey Home

+
Start~3,000 m
End~1,640 m
Hiking3–4 hours
HabitatRainforest

After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate.

At the gate: Complete park exit procedures · Collect your summit certificate if applicable · Say goodbye to your mountain crew · Transfer back to Moshi.

At the hotel: Your premium experience concludes with hot shower → fresh clothes → relaxed meal → celebration. You have officially completed the Northern Circuit.

Overnight: Premium hotel

Premium Northern Circuit FAQ

Is Northern Circuit difficult?+
Yes. Kilimanjaro is a serious high-altitude trek, even though it does not normally require technical mountaineering skills.
Why is the Northern Circuit 9 days?+
The longer itinerary provides more time for gradual acclimatization and allows the route to circle much of the mountain.
Is Northern Circuit better than Lemosho?+
Neither is universally "better." Northern Circuit offers a longer and more remote journey, while Lemosho provides exceptional scenery and acclimatization over a shorter itinerary.
Is Northern Circuit crowded?+
The northern section generally sees fewer trekkers than some of Kilimanjaro's busier southern sections.
Do I need previous climbing experience?+
No technical climbing experience is normally required, but you need appropriate fitness and preparation.
Can beginners climb Northern Circuit?+
Yes, provided they are properly prepared and medically suitable for high-altitude trekking.
How high is Uhuru Peak?+
5,895 metres / 19,341 feet.
Where do we sleep?+
On this premium package, guests stay in premium mountain accommodation subject to the exact services offered by KiliSummit.
What happens if I cannot summit?+
Your guide team will prioritize your safety. Depending on your condition and circumstances, they may modify the ascent or arrange descent.
Do you provide oxygen?+
Emergency oxygen is available for appropriate emergency use. We do not market oxygen as a treatment that makes altitude risk disappear.
Are tips included?+
No, unless KiliSummit specifically chooses to include them.
Can I make the climb private?+
Yes. This page is explicitly positioned as a private premium expedition.
