What Is a Kilimanjaro Group Climb?

A group climb — also called a join climb or scheduled departure — is a Kilimanjaro expedition where individual travellers, couples, friends and small groups book places on the same scheduled trek. Instead of hiring an entire mountain crew exclusively for your own private group, you join other travellers following the same route, itinerary and departure date. This makes group climbing one of the most accessible ways to experience Mount Kilimanjaro while still receiving professional mountain support.

You don't have to arrive with a group. A single traveller, a couple, a family or 3–4 friends can each book a place and join other climbers. You arrive as individuals and meet your climbing team in Tanzania.

Why Choose a Group Kilimanjaro Climb?

01

Lower Cost

The cost of expedition logistics, mountain crew, equipment and operational expenses is shared across participants.

02

Meet People Worldwide

Trek alongside travellers from Europe, North America, Asia, Australia, Africa and elsewhere.

03

Shared Motivation

Summiting is demanding. Having other climbers around you creates teamwork and encouragement.

04

Perfect for Solo Travelers

You don't need to organise an entire private expedition yourself.

05

Ideal for Couples & Friends

A small group of friends can book together and still meet other travellers.

06

Scheduled & Straightforward

Select an available departure date, prepare for the trek and meet the group in Tanzania.

8-Day Lemosho Route Group Climb — Day by Day

Day 1 — Londorossi Gate to Forest Camp+

Elevation: ~2,100 m → 2,780 m · Walking: ~3–4 hrs · Habitat: Montane rainforest · Meals: L, D · Overnight: Forest Camp

After breakfast in Moshi, your team transfers toward the western side of Kilimanjaro. After completing park registration at Londorossi Gate, the trek begins through the montane rainforest. You gradually gain elevation surrounded by dense vegetation and the sounds of the forest. The pace is deliberately slow to begin your adaptation to altitude.

Day 2 — Forest Camp to Shira Camp+

Elevation: ~2,780 m → 3,500 m · Walking: ~5–6 hrs · Habitat: Rainforest → moorland · Meals: B, L, D · Overnight: Shira Camp

The vegetation gradually changes as you leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone. The landscape opens dramatically as Kilimanjaro's higher slopes begin to dominate the horizon. Giant heathers and lobelias appear as the air cools.

Day 3 — Shira Plateau to Moir Camp+

Elevation: ~3,500 m → 4,100 m · Walking: ~4–6 hrs · Habitat: Shira Plateau · Meals: B, L, D · Overnight: Moir Camp

This is an important acclimatisation day. The route climbs gradually across the vast Shira Plateau toward higher elevations. Your guides control the walking pace carefully to allow your body to adapt, with wide-open views of the Kibo cone.

Day 4 — Moir Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp+

Elevation: ~4,100 m → 4,630 m → 3,900 m · Walking: ~6–8 hrs · Habitat: Alpine desert · Meals: B, L, D · Overnight: Barranco Camp

One of the most important acclimatisation stages. You climb to a significantly higher elevation at Lava Tower before descending toward Barranco — following the principle "climb high, sleep lower." The landscape becomes increasingly alpine and dramatic.

Day 5 — Barranco to Karanga+

Elevation: ~3,900 m → 3,995 m · Walking: ~4–5 hrs · Habitat: Barranco Valley · Meals: B, L, D · Overnight: Karanga Camp

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall. With the assistance of your mountain guides, you negotiate the steep, non-technical rocky terrain before continuing across ridges toward Karanga.

Day 6 — Karanga to Barafu Camp+

Elevation: ~3,995 m → 4,673 m · Walking: ~3–4 hrs · Habitat: Alpine desert · Meals: B, L, D · Overnight: Barafu Camp

You enter the alpine desert zone. Barafu becomes your final high camp before the summit attempt. Your guides conduct final preparations and brief you about summit night. An early dinner and rest are essential.

Day 7 — Summit Day: Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Millennium Camp+

Elevation: ~4,673 m → 5,895 m → ~3,100 m · Walking: ~12–16 hrs · Meals: B, L, D · Overnight: Millennium Camp

You normally begin the summit attempt around midnight. The ascent is slow and deliberate toward Stella Point (~5,750 m) at sunrise, then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak — 5,895 m. After reaching the summit, you descend to a lower camp for recovery.

Day 8 — Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate+

Elevation: ~3,100 m → 1,640 m · Walking: ~4–5 hrs · Habitat: Rainforest · Meals: B, L

The final descent takes you back through Kilimanjaro's vegetation zones toward Mweka Gate. After completing park formalities and collecting your summit certificate, your KiliSummit team transfers you back to your hotel. End of expedition.

Your Safety Comes First

Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude mountain, and reaching the summit requires more than physical fitness. Our mountain team monitors climbers throughout the expedition and adapts the pace according to conditions and individual response to altitude.

Experienced Mountain Guides

Responsible for route management, group coordination and mountain safety.

Altitude Monitoring

Of your condition throughout the trek, especially as elevation increases.

Emergency Preparedness

With appropriate first-aid and emergency equipment on every climb.

Slow Trekking Pace

Emphasising controlled pacing and acclimatisation rather than racing toward camp.

A summit attempt is never guaranteed. Weather, altitude-related illness and mountain conditions can make continuing unsafe. The final decision always prioritises safety.

How Large Are Our Groups?

We keep scheduled expeditions at a manageable size so the mountain experience remains organised, personal and enjoyable. Group size varies by route, season and departure. If demand is high, we divide into smaller trekking teams with coordinated logistics.

Traveling Alone?

You don't need to find a climbing partner before booking. Group climbs are designed so individual travellers can join a scheduled expedition. You arrive as a solo traveller and meet your team in Tanzania — the mountain often turns strangers into teammates.

International Group, One Language

Our scheduled group climbs are conducted primarily in English, allowing climbers from different countries to communicate easily with guides and fellow trekkers.
