Eight trekking days allow the route to progress at a more measured pace.
The climb begins in the rainforest on Kilimanjaro's western side before opening into the expansive Shira Plateau.
The route includes the important high-altitude Lava Tower section followed by descent to Barranco, creating a classic "climb high, sleep lower" acclimatization pattern.
After a long day of trekking, your camp becomes a place to properly rest, eat and recover.
You climb with your chosen companions rather than being assigned to an open joining group.
Your guide can adjust breaks, walking pace and daily rhythm according to the group's condition and mountain circumstances.
The Lemosho route starts on the western side of Kilimanjaro and gradually crosses from rainforest into moorland and alpine desert. After traversing the Shira Plateau, the route ascends toward Lava Tower before descending to Barranco. From there, the trail continues through Karanga to Barafu, where the summit attempt begins.
Each day is a chapter in your Kilimanjaro story. Click to explore the details.
Rainforest | The Journey Begins
Your expedition begins after breakfast at your hotel. Your private vehicle takes you toward the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Londorossi Gate. After completing park registration and expedition formalities, you enter the forest and begin walking beneath the dense canopy.
The atmosphere changes almost immediately. The forest is humid, green and alive with birdsong. Depending on conditions, you may encounter signs of wildlife and hear or see monkeys moving through the canopy. The first day is intentionally gentle. There is no reason to rush. Your mountain team establishes camp while you enjoy your first evening on Kilimanjaro.
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa / Forest Camp
Forest to Moorland Transition
The forest gradually becomes thinner as the trail climbs toward the Shira Plateau. Tall trees give way to giant heather, open moorland and volcanic landscapes. The mountain begins to reveal itself. On clear days, you may begin to see Kibo, the main volcanic cone of Kilimanjaro. This is where the character of the Lemosho route really starts to emerge.
After reaching Shira 1, you have time to rest and enjoy the changing landscape. Evening: Your guide conducts an altitude and wellbeing assessment before dinner.
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Across the Shira Plateau
Today is deliberately less demanding. The trail crosses the dramatic Shira Plateau. The landscape becomes increasingly open, with volcanic rock formations, giant heathers and expansive views. This is an excellent day to slow down, photograph the landscape and allow your body to continue adapting to altitude.
Depending on conditions and the group's energy, your guide may organize an acclimatization walk around the plateau.
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp
The Acclimatization Day
This is one of the most important days of the entire expedition. You climb steadily toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,600 metres. The landscape becomes stark and volcanic. You have now entered a dramatically different high-altitude environment. At Lava Tower, you stop for lunch and an acclimatization break.
Then comes the important part: You descend. The trail continues down toward Barranco Camp. This "climb high, sleep lower" pattern is an important feature of the Lemosho itinerary. As you approach Barranco, the famous Barranco Wall rises dramatically above the valley.
Overnight: Barranco Camp
The Barranco Wall
Today begins with one of Kilimanjaro's most memorable sections: The Barranco Wall. Although it looks intimidating from camp, the route is primarily a scrambling/climbing-style hiking section rather than technical rock climbing. Your guide carefully chooses the safest line and assists where necessary. At the top, you are rewarded with spectacular views back toward Barranco Valley. The trail then continues across ridges and valleys toward Karanga.
Because this is a relatively short trekking day, the afternoon is intentionally relaxed.
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Preparing for Summit Night
Today is short but extremely important. You ascend toward Barafu Camp, the principal base for the summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly barren. Vegetation disappears. Volcanic rock dominates the environment. As you approach Barafu, the summit becomes very real.
Your guide reviews the summit plan with you: departure time, clothing, hydration, headlamp, snacks, summit equipment, pace, emergency procedures.
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Summit Day — 5,895 Metres
This is the defining day of your expedition. You wake during the night, usually around midnight, although the exact departure depends on the group's condition, weather and guide assessment. After a light pre-summit meal, you begin climbing toward Stella Point. The pace is deliberately slow. Pole pole. Step by step. The night is quiet. Above you, the stars can be extraordinary. As dawn approaches, the horizon begins to brighten.
STELLA POINT — You have reached approximately 5,739 metres. After a short rest, the route continues around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.
Take your summit photographs. Celebrate with your team. Enjoy the moment. But the expedition is not finished. You descend from the summit toward Barafu before continuing down to Mweka Camp. The descent is physically demanding, so your guides monitor the group carefully.
Overnight: Mweka Camp
The Final Descent
After breakfast, you begin the final descent through the rainforest. The air becomes warmer. The vegetation becomes greener. The altitude rapidly decreases. At Mweka Gate, your expedition officially comes to an end. You complete the exit procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate. Your private vehicle then takes you back to your hotel.
Overnight: Premium hotel in Moshi
