What Is Altitude Sickness?

Altitude sickness is a group of altitude-related illnesses caused by ascending too quickly to elevations where the air pressure โ€” and therefore the available oxygen โ€” is significantly lower than at sea level. On Kilimanjaro, acute mountain sickness (AMS) is the most common form, while high-altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) and high-altitude cerebral oedema (HACE) are rare but potentially life-threatening emergencies.

The body needs time to adjust to lower oxygen pressure โ€” a process called acclimatisation. When ascent is faster than acclimatisation, symptoms appear. When Altitude Sickness Means You Should Stop Ascending

The single most important rule on Kilimanjaro is this: if symptoms are worsening, do not continue ascending. Mild symptoms that do not improve with rest at the same altitude, or any worsening symptoms at all, are a signal to hold or descend.

Pole pole is the Swahili phrase commonly used by Kilimanjaro guides to encourage a slow, controlled pace. It is the single most effective prevention โ€” giving your body time to acclimatise. Trust the pace your guide sets.

Longer itineraries generally provide more time for gradual ascent and acclimatisation than shorter ones. For this reason, 7โ€“8 day options tend to perform better than 5โ€“6 day options on the same route.
