Shira Plateau

You leave the forest and enter the broad volcanic landscape of Shira.

🗼

Lava Tower

The route provides a natural opportunity for a climb-high/sleep-low acclimatization day.

🧗

Barranco Wall

One of Machame's defining experiences is the steep but non-technical Barranco scramble.

🌄

Southern Circuit

You experience several of Kilimanjaro's most recognizable camps and landscapes.

🌲

A private expedition does not have a fixed per-person price independent of group size. Guides, porters, transport, equipment and other expedition costs are shared across the members of your private party, so larger private groups normally have a lower cost per person.

7-Day Private Machame Route — Day-by-Day

Each day is a chapter in your private Kilimanjaro story. Click to explore the details.

DAY 1

Machame Gate → Machame Camp

Into the Rainforest

+
Start~1,800 m
Camp~2,835 m
Walking5–7 hours
Distance~11 km

Your private expedition begins with a transfer from Moshi to Machame Gate. After registration and park formalities, you enter the rainforest. The first day should intentionally be controlled. Your guide establishes your pace from the beginning.

What you'll experience: Enormous forest trees · Moss-covered trunks · Dense vegetation · Birds · Mountain forest atmosphere · Changing weather · Increasingly remote surroundings.

Camp: Arrive at Machame Camp, settle into your tent and meet the mountain crew.

Private advantage: Your guide can spend time understanding how everyone in the group is feeling before the first night at altitude.

DAY 2

Machame Camp → Shira Camp

Leaving the Forest

+
Start~2,835 m
Camp~3,850 m
Walking4–6 hours
Distance~5 km

The vegetation changes dramatically. The dense forest gives way to open highland terrain, giant heathers and volcanic slopes. The route begins to feel much more alpine.

What you'll see: Shira Plateau · Kibo views · Giant heathers · Open skies · Volcanic ridges.

Your guide's focus: Keep the pace deliberately slow. The objective isn't to arrive first; it is to allow the body to adapt. TANAPA itself advises climbers to ascend slowly when climbing Kilimanjaro.

DAY 3

Shira → Lava Tower → Barranco

The Acclimatization Day

+
Start~3,850 m
Lava Tower~4,630 m
Barranco~3,900 m
Walking6–8 hours

You climb substantially higher during the day before descending to Barranco for the night. Climb High. Sleep Lower. This is one of the most important acclimatization concepts on the mountain.

Experience: The landscape becomes increasingly barren. You'll encounter volcanic rock · Alpine vegetation · Giant groundsel · Lava Tower · Dramatic Barranco Valley · Kibo's southern face.

Private advantage: Your guide can regulate the group's pace and stop when necessary.

DAY 4

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

The Barranco Wall

+
Start~3,900 m
Camp~3,995 m
Walking4–5 hours
Climbers using hands and feet on the Barranco Wall, Machame Route

This is Machame's signature day. The Barranco Wall looks imposing from camp, but the normal route is a scramble rather than technical rock climbing. You approach the wall, climb steadily using hands and feet where appropriate, cross rocky ledges, reach the upper section, then descend and climb through the Karanga valleys to arrive at Karanga Camp.

A mountain guide should control the line and pace around the wall.

DAY 5

Karanga → Barafu

The Summit Base Camp

+
Start~3,995 m
Barafu~4,673 m
Walking3–4 hours

This is a shorter trekking day, deliberately leaving time to rest. At Barafu, your mountain team prepares you for summit night.

Your guide will: Check your equipment · Discuss weather · Review summit clothing · Confirm headlamps · Review hydration · Explain the summit schedule · Discuss safety procedures · Conduct health checks.

Evening: Dinner is early. Try to sleep as much as possible before the midnight/late-night start. Tomorrow is summit day.

DAY 6

Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Summit Day

+
Start~4,673 m
Summit5,895 m
DescentMweka Camp
Effort12–16+ hours

Around midnight: The team starts the summit attempt. The pace is intentionally very slow.

Stella Point: After climbing the steep upper slopes, you approach the crater rim at Stella Point. Then comes the final traverse toward Uhuru Peak.

UHURU PEAK5,895 M — AT THE SUMMIT

Your guide helps manage time at altitude, photographs, cold exposure, energy levels, hydration and descent preparation. The summit isn't the end of the day. You descend toward Barafu and then continue toward Mweka Camp according to the operating itinerary.

Safety statement: Summit success is never guaranteed. Altitude affects people differently, and weather or medical conditions can change the plan. Your guide may turn the group around if continuing is unsafe.
DAY 7

Mweka → Mweka Gate → Moshi

From Mountain to Town

+
Start~3,100 m
Mweka Gate~1,640 m
Walking4–5 hours

You descend through the rainforest. The scenery changes rapidly as altitude decreases. At Mweka Gate, complete the exit formalities and collect your summit certificate where applicable. Then: Private transfer → Moshi.

The final experience: Hot shower. Clean clothes. Good food. Rest. And a celebration with the people you shared the mountain with.

8-Day Private Machame

The 8-day private Machame itinerary spreads the journey over an additional day, allowing your group to progress more gradually and build more recovery time into the expedition.

Where the additional day is inserted

  1. Machame Gate → Machame Camp — Into the rainforest
  2. Machame → Shira — Leaving the forest
  3. Additional acclimatization / Shira exploration — Extra time to adapt
  4. Shira → Lava Tower → Barranco — Climb high, sleep lower
  5. Barranco → Karanga — The Barranco Wall
  6. Karanga → Barafu — Summit base camp
  7. Summit → Mweka — Uhuru Peak and descent
  8. Mweka → Gate → Moshi — Return to town

The exact operational itinerary should be confirmed against your actual package before publishing.

Why 7 Days Is Our Recommended Private Machame Itinerary

6

6 Days

More compressed. Less time for gradual acclimatization.

7

7 Days

Better balance between acclimatization, walking time, cost and scenery.

8

8 Days

More time and slower progression for a more relaxed rhythm.

Longer itineraries generally provide more opportunity for gradual acclimatization, while individual response to altitude varies considerably. TANAPA likewise advises gradual ascent and acclimatization-oriented planning.
