Why Choose a Private Lemosho Climb?

The Lemosho Route is one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic approaches and is particularly well suited to private expeditions. Your group begins on the quieter western side of the mountain before crossing the Shira Plateau and joining the southern circuit toward Barranco, Karanga and Barafu. A private departure allows your group to choose its travel dates and gives the expedition a more personal atmosphere from beginning to end.

The route begins in the western montane forest, creating a gradual transition from lower elevation environments.

🌄

Shira Plateau

The route crosses the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's signature landscapes.

Strong Acclimatization Profile

The longer Lemosho itineraries give travelers more time to adapt to increasing elevation.

🤫

Quieter Start

The western approach can feel considerably more remote before joining the southern circuit.

8-Day Private Lemosho Route — Day-by-Day

Each day is a chapter in your private Kilimanjaro story. Click to explore the details.

DAY 1

Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa

Entering Kilimanjaro

+
Altitude~2,100–2,850 m
Hiking3–5 hours
EnvironmentMontane rainforest
OvernightMti Mkubwa

Your private expedition begins with the drive from Moshi toward the western side of Kilimanjaro. After registration and park formalities, you begin walking beneath the dense rainforest canopy. The first day is deliberately gentle.

Expect: Huge forest trees · Moss-covered trunks · Birdlife · Humid forest air · Occasional monkey sightings · The transition from farmland into wilderness.

Your private experience: Your guide establishes your walking rhythm from the beginning rather than forcing your party to keep up with a large group.

Camp: Your crew prepares camp while you settle in, eat your first mountain dinner and review the next day's plan.

Guide's focus: Start slowly. The climb has only just begun.

DAY 2

Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1

From Forest to Open Moorland

+
Altitude~2,850–3,500 m
Hiking5–6 hours
EnvironmentMoorland / heath
OvernightShira 1

The forest gradually disappears as the landscape opens. Giant heathers, grasses and alpine vegetation replace the dense trees. This is where Kilimanjaro starts to look completely different.

You begin getting your first dramatic views toward Kibo, the surrounding valleys, Shira Plateau and the western mountain landscape.

Acclimatization focus: The goal is not speed. Your guides monitor how your group is adapting as elevation increases.

Private advantage: Your guide can pay close attention to individual members of your group.

DAY 3

Shira 1 → Shira 2

Crossing the Shira Plateau

+
Altitude~3,500–3,850 m
Hiking4–6 hours
EnvironmentHigh moorland
OvernightShira 2

Today is about gradual progression. The open Shira Plateau offers enormous views and a very different atmosphere from the rainforest below. Depending on conditions and your group's energy, your guide can incorporate a short acclimatization walk.

What you'll notice: The scenery becomes more volcanic and exposed. The summit cone of Kibo begins to dominate the horizon. This is one of the most visually impressive sections of the trek.

Private experience: Take your time. Stop for photographs. Ask your guide about the mountain's geology, vegetation, history and local traditions. The expedition should feel like a journey — not simply a race between camps.

DAY 4

Shira 2 → Lava Tower → Barranco

Climb High, Sleep Low

+
Altitude~3,850→4,630→3,900 m
Hiking6–8 hours
OvernightBarranco Camp

This is one of the most important acclimatization days. You climb toward Lava Tower, substantially higher than your camp, before descending to Barranco.

Why this day matters: You deliberately spend part of the day at a higher altitude and then sleep lower. This gives your body exposure to elevation without immediately sleeping at the highest point reached.
  • Volcanic rock
  • Sparse alpine vegetation
  • Giant groundsel plants
  • Lava Tower
  • Dramatic Barranco Valley
  • Towering cliffs
  • Views toward Kibo's southern face
DAY 5

Barranco → Karanga

The Barranco Wall

+
Altitude~3,900–4,000 m
Hiking4–5 hours
OvernightKaranga Camp

The day begins with one of Kilimanjaro's most recognizable features — the Barranco Wall.

Is it technical? No technical mountaineering system is normally required for the standard route. But it is a steep scramble involving hands and feet. Your guide controls the pace and route choice.

Once above the wall, the trail undulates across ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga. The terrain becomes increasingly alpine.

Private advantage: Your guide can slow the group down around difficult sections, stop for photographs and manage the day around individual energy levels.

DAY 6

Karanga → Barafu

The Summit Base

+
Altitude~4,000–4,673 m
Hiking3–5 hours
EnvironmentAlpine desert
OvernightBarafu Camp

This is a shorter trekking day, but don't mistake it for an easy day. Altitude becomes increasingly important.

At Barafu: Inspect summit equipment · Discuss the summit plan · Check clothing and headlamps · Review the expected weather · Hydrate · Eat early · Prepare for the night ascent.

By late afternoon, the mountain becomes quiet. Your summit attempt is only hours away.

DAY 7

Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Mweka

Summit Day

+
Starting~4,673 m
Summit5,895 m
Effort12–16+ hours
Start~Midnight

00:00 — The ascent begins: Your group leaves Barafu during the night. The pace is deliberately slow. Headlamps create a line of light across the volcanic slopes.

Stella Point: After several hours of climbing, you reach the crater rim. Depending on the weather and your group's condition, the first light of dawn may begin appearing.

UHURU PEAK5,895 METRES — THE ROOF OF AFRICA

This is the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Time at the summit should be managed around weather, exposure and the condition of each climber.

Descent: After the summit, you begin the long descent toward lower altitude. You eventually continue to Mweka Camp.

Important safety information: The summit is never guaranteed. If a guide determines that continuing is unsafe because of altitude illness, weather, exhaustion or another serious concern, the group may be turned around.
DAY 8

Mweka → Mweka Gate → Moshi

Back to the Rainforest

+
Altitude~3,100–1,640 m
Hiking4–5 hours
OvernightPremium hotel

You wake considerably lower than the summit and descend through rainforest. The environment transforms again.

At Mweka Gate: Complete park formalities · Receive your summit certificate where applicable · Mountain → vehicle → Moshi. A private transfer returns your group to town.

The evening: Hot shower. Fresh clothes. A proper meal. Stories from the mountain. And the realization that you have just crossed one of Africa's most famous landscapes on foot.

Private Lemosho FAQ

How much does a private Lemosho climb cost?+
The price depends on group size, duration (7 or 8 days), season, and whether you choose Classic or Premium services. Prices typically start around $2,600 per person for a private group of 5-8 people on the 8-day itinerary, with exact quotes confirmed before booking.
How many people can join a private Lemosho expedition?+
Private expeditions are available for solo travelers, couples, families, friends and larger private groups. For larger parties, the guide and support crew structure is adjusted according to group size and route requirements.
Is Lemosho suitable for beginners?+
Yes. The 8-day Lemosho itinerary is well-suited to first-time Kilimanjaro climbers who are physically prepared. The longer duration provides more time for gradual acclimatization compared to shorter itineraries.
Why is 8-day Lemosho recommended?+
The 8-day itinerary provides more time for gradual acclimatization compared to shorter versions. This improves comfort, safety and overall experience, especially at higher elevations.
What is the difference between private and group Lemosho?+
Private Lemosho gives you flexible departure dates, route selection, personalized pacing and an expedition reserved for your party only. Group Lemosho follows scheduled departures with other travelers at a coordinated pace and usually at a lower per-person cost.
Can I choose my departure date?+
Yes. Private expeditions allow you to choose a departure date that suits your international flights, holiday schedule and other Tanzania plans, subject to park availability.
Is Lemosho harder than Machame?+
Both routes are challenging, but Lemosho's gradual western approach and typically longer itineraries are often considered slightly easier for acclimatization. The summit day is comparable between the two routes.
What is the Lemosho Route success rate?+
Success rates vary by operator, itinerary length, individual acclimatization and conditions. The 8-day Lemosho itinerary generally performs well compared to shorter itineraries because of the additional acclimatization time. Exact success rates should not be treated as guarantees.
Do I need technical climbing experience?+
No. Technical mountaineering experience is not normally required for the standard Lemosho trekking route. The main challenges are altitude, endurance and the long summit day.
Can couples and families book a private Lemosho?+
Yes. Private Lemosho is particularly well suited to couples and families. The expedition can be organized around different fitness levels, meal preferences and pacing needs.
Can I upgrade to Premium?+
Yes. A private Lemosho can be upgraded with premium services including larger walk-in tents, enhanced dining, private toilet facilities and upgraded accommodation.
Can I combine Lemosho with a safari or Zanzibar?+
Yes. Many private climbers combine their Kilimanjaro expedition with a Tanzania safari (Serengeti, Ngorongoro) or a Zanzibar beach extension. We can coordinate the full Tanzania itinerary around your climb.
What happens if someone cannot continue?+
Your guide team assesses the situation and prioritizes safety. Descent may be recommended when necessary. The expedition is organized so that one person's decision to descend does not automatically affect the rest of the private party, subject to guide and safety requirements.
