Kilimanjaro Travel Insurance Guide
Travel insurance exclusions vary. Before climbing, confirm directly with your insurer that the policy covers your route, maximum elevation and planned activities, and understand what assistance is and is not provided.
Check high-altitude trekking cover
Ask the insurer to confirm cover for trekking to 5,895 m on Mount Kilimanjaro, including the route and trip dates you plan to book. Some policies limit altitude, exclude guided trekking or apply special conditions. Obtain the answer in writing and keep the policy certificate available during travel.
Understand medical and evacuation terms
Read the policy wording for emergency medical expenses, mountain rescue or evacuation, repatriation, exclusions, excesses and the assistance provider’s contact process. Do not assume a particular evacuation method, response time or operator-provided medical service. Ask the insurer what the policy actually covers and how to request help.
Review cancellation and disruption cover
Check how the policy treats flight delays, missed connections, trip interruption, cancellation, baggage and pre-existing medical conditions. Coverage limits and claim requirements differ. Keep receipts, booking documents and written confirmations needed by your insurer.
Coordinate with your booking team
Share any relevant restrictions with the climbing operator before confirming your itinerary. Insurance is a climber’s responsibility and is not included in the advertised package price. Review the altitude and acclimatization guide and the route notes for your chosen climb.
