Which Kilimanjaro Route Should You Choose?

πŸ†

Best Success Rate

Lemosho

8 days of gradual acclimatisation give you the highest odds of reaching Uhuru Peak.

πŸ’Ž

Best Value

Machame

Stunning scenery and strong acclimatisation at a mid-range price. Our most popular choice.

πŸ’΅

Best Budget

Marangu

The only hut route and the most affordable. Great if comfort and cost are priorities.

🌦️

Best for Wet Season

Rongai

The driest northern approach. Ideal if you're climbing in March, April, or November.

Still deciding? Check the best time to climb and our difficulty guide to match a route to your fitness and schedule.

Our Signature Climbing Packages

Prices shown are per person for a group of 2–4 climbers.

Climbers scrambling up the Barranco Wall on the 7-Day Machame Route, Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania Most Popular

Machame Route

7 Days

The famous "Whiskey Route" is our most-booked package for good reason. The Machame Route packs incredible variety into seven days β€” dense rainforest, the dramatic Barranco Wall scramble, and sweeping views of the Southern Icefield. It's busier than Lemosho but offers superb acclimatisation via the climb-high-sleep-low principle, giving it an ~85% success rate. Perfect for confident hikers who want big scenery and a proven track record without the premium price of an 8-day trek. We strongly recommend the 7-day option over the 6-day for better acclimatisation. View full Machame itinerary β†’

Trekkers on the quiet northern Rongai Route approach, Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Rongai Route

7 Days

The Rongai Route is the only trail approaching from the north near the Kenyan border, and it's the driest route on the mountain. That makes it the smartest choice if you're climbing during the wet season (March–May or November). It's also the quietest route, so you'll share the trail with far fewer people. The gradients are gentle, the scenery is wild and open, and you'll pass the beautiful Mawenzi Tarn. With an ~80% success rate on the 7-day itinerary, it's a reliable, peaceful option. Sleeping huts at Horombo on the 6-Day Marangu Route, Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Marangu Route

6 Days

The classic "Coca-Cola Route" is the most affordable and the only trail with sleeping huts instead of tents β€” a real comfort upgrade. The Marangu Route follows a steady, direct ascent from the south-east. Because it's shorter, its success rate (~75%) is lower than Machame or Lemosho, so we only offer the 6-day version to give you a crucial extra acclimatisation day. Ideal for budget-conscious climbers and anyone who prefers a bed and a roof over a tent. View full Marangu itinerary β†’

"People ask me which package to choose. My answer is always the same: pick the one that gives you the most days on the mountain that your budget and schedule allow. An 8-day Lemosho is a beautiful, gradual walk. A 6-day Marangu is a rush. The mountain rewards patience. Choose the longer package and you will stand on the roof of Africa."

Packages & Pricing FAQ

How much does it cost to climb Kilimanjaro?+
A guided 6 to 8-day climb with a reputable local operator costs $2,100 to $3,100 including all park fees. Door-to-door with flights, visa, gear, and tips, budget $4,000 to $5,500 total. See the full cost breakdown.
Which route has the highest success rate?+
The 8-day Lemosho Route has the highest success rate at over 90%, followed by the 7-day Machame at around 85%. Longer itineraries always outperform shorter ones. See our success rate guide.
How much should I tip guides and porters?+
Tipping is customary and a major part of crew income. Budget $250 to $400 per climber for the whole team, split among guides, cooks, and porters. We provide a detailed tipping guide before your climb.
Can beginners climb Kilimanjaro?+
Yes. Kilimanjaro is a trekking peak requiring no technical climbing skills. Beginners succeed every week by choosing a 7+ day route, training for endurance, and walking slowly. See our difficulty guide.
What is the cheapest Kilimanjaro route?+
The 6-day Marangu Route is the most affordable at $2,100, and it's the only route with sleeping huts. However, it has a lower success rate than Machame or Lemosho due to a shorter acclimatisation window.
How far in advance should I book?+
Book 6 to 9 months ahead for peak season (January, February, June to September). Popular departure dates fill quickly. Off-season climbs (March, November) can be booked with shorter notice.
What is included in the package price?+
All packages include TANAPA park fees, camping or hut fees, rescue fees, certified guides and porters, three meals daily, treated water, 4-season tents, sleeping mats, and emergency oxygen. Flights, visas, insurance, gear rental, and tips are not included.
